Culture, Community, Sports, Family
The Texas Vietnamese Students Association (VSA) was established at the University of Texas on October 12, 1972. We are the first VSA established in Texas, and today, we are one of the largest student-run organizations on campus. We welcome everyone, regardless of background, to join and see what it means to be a member of our organization. Texas VSA is a great way to meet new people and make lifelong memories. As a social-cultural student organization, we place great emphasis on Vietnamese culture, community, sports, and the Texas VSA family.
Culture.
Promoting Vietnamese culture is a top priority in Texas VSA. We host various events throughout the year to achieve this goal:
Culture Workshops are held throughout the semester. Here, members learn about the Vietnamese culture through arts and crafts, games, and simple Vietnamese words and phrases.
Culture Showcase is Texas VSA’s biggest cultural event. This show allows members of Texas VSA to exhibit cultural performances, exposing the audience to the lifestyles and traditions of Vietnam.
With these events going on in VSA, we are also trying to bring the Vietnamese curriculum to the University of Texas at Austin!
Community.
Without support and sponsorships throughout the city of Austin, Texas VSA would not be what it is today. To give back to the community, numerous events are held throughout the school year, allowing members to show their support through service.
Texas VSA’s annual Date Auction and Benefit Lunch are events that raise money for our collective philanthropy project (CPP). Texas VSA members also volunteer at several community service opportunities, including Summitt Elementary School’s Mid-Autumn Festival, weekly tutoring at the school, the Lunar New Year Festival, and more!
Sports.
Here at the University of Texas, intramural (IM) sports are a vital part of college life. Through Texas VSA, members can unite and compete in a variety of sports through intramurals, including football, basketball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and more! Numerous teams are created for every sport we compete in, so everyone of every skill level can play in Texas VSA’s intramural teams!
Family.
Because Texas VSA is a large organization, we use a family system to provide members with the opportunity to meet someone new and build more personal connections. All members of Texas VSA are randomly divided into families at the beginning of every school year. Led by two officers, each family will take part in family events, compete against other families, and develop a strong sense of family pride.
This culminates our EPIC Family Retreat, a fun, competition-filled event! Within Texas VSA, members build strong connections not only with their Texas VSA families but also with members across the organization. After all, in VSA, everyone is family!
